Dear Friend,
As your elected City Auditor, I have asked the tough questions: Is this City program efficient and effective? Is this action appropriate, legal and equitable? I have defended your interest that public funds are used appropriately, through increased oversight and improved efficiency and transparency of City operations:
  • My office has strengthened controls over revenue collection, cash handling, community agency monitoring, and public works contracts.
  • We audited expense accounts, reviewed information technology security and police staffing efficiency, and identified and collected over $2 million in under-reported revenue.
  • We initiated a training program in performance accountability and fraud prevention for all City employees, and have worked with Berkeley City College on training to enhance City employees' financial skills.

I currently serve on the national board of the Association of Local Government Auditors and convene quarterly meetings and training sessions of the Bay Area Local Government Auditors. I've advocated for independent audit committees and independent auditors in local government, and provided advice and resources to the Berkeley School District's citizen audit committee members. As Membership Chair of the National Women's Political Caucus, Alameda North, I've worked to encourage women to become active in the public sphere.

I ask for your support so that I can continue for another term to help improve our City's operations and identify and analyze City problems.

My office conducts independent analysis and issues public reports on ways that City operations can be improved. To preserve the Auditor's independence from City management, and to encourage informed and thoughtful public discussion of the issues, I need to know that I can call on you. I would like to be able to count on having the benefit of your honest opinions, your good ideas, and your intelligent questions so that we can work together for a more accountable and effective City government.

Since I am running unopposed this November, I will use all funds raised in support of my candidacy for outreach to new voters in Berkeley. It is important to all of us that those who are new to the community, and most especially young people registering to vote for the first time, join us in working for more effective and accountable local government.

Each $49 contribution sent will allow me to reach 100 new voters and encourage their participation in community governance in partnership with the Auditor's office.

Whether you prefer to e-mail, use the web site, or contact me by mail, I'd like you to endorse my candidacy, to offer suggestions, and to let me know you how I can contact you when I need your support and advice. Even if you don't wish to contribute funds, I would very much like you to let me know that I have your support!

If you would like to make a financial contribution to my efforts now and over the next four years to continue to inform Berkeley residents about City issues, please include your occupation and employer IF your contribution is $50 or greater. All contributions will be used for campaign purposes, and during my tenure as Auditor, to increase my ability to communicate directly with the Berkeley public about matters concerning us all.

Please contact me for more information and to get involved in our ongoing work. With your support, I will continue to work on your behalf to identify and analyze City problems and improve City performance.

Sincerely,

Ann-Marie Hogan
